The Thousand-Year Door hack (Thousand-Year Door+), is now available for download This mod tweaks dialogue and textures throughout the game to bring things closer to the Japanese release, fixes various oversights from the English localization, and much more This hack makes a bevvy of script and texture changes to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The dialogue still plays out the same way, it's just a matter of interpretation. If the gag was intended to be "she's a girl but other characters think she's a dude" that doesn't really change much. He wasn't around to hear Bedlam's insults, but in the original JP version, talking to him with Vivian results in him getting flustered and questioning her gender.Įven if the intent was for Bedlam's words to just be empty insults, Goombella still takes them at face value. I think the best evidence is the Goomba in Keelhaul Key. That also seems to be the conclusion Nintendo of Europe ran with, as the French and Spanish localizations are much more upfront about it. Most sources seem to agree that she was genuinely born male, which tbh isn't even that out of place in a Mario game. Some seem to think that Bedlam's "you're a male" insult was just an empty taunt meant to belittle her. Regarding Vivian's gender, I've seen tons of conflicting sources as to what the original intent of the Japanese text was. I didn't want to go full-on Sticker Star, though, so they're sort of halfway between classic and modern. There's another optional add-on that tweaks certain enemy designs to make them closer to their Sticker Star / Color Splash appearance. Stuff like renaming Rawk Hawk "Hawk Hogan" (lifted from the Spanish localization) or saying how much damage battle items do in their descriptions (ala Paper Mario 64) There's also a secondary mod that makes some decidedly less faithful changes.
